Saalbach, Austria – a summary of a week skiing the Saalbach Valley

A summary of a week of skiing in the Saalbach Valley, Austria.

Hotel:  Fantastic – we really enjoyed staying at the Baerenbachhof. We had breakfast and evening meal included in the cost.  The food was good and there was a great choice of evening meals available. The room was great (a sort of an apartment with two bedrooms and a bathroom). Really good ski/boot room. Great sauna and hot-tub in the basement.

Snow conditions: Variable.  We had a lot of snow during the week.  We also suffered from a low cloud-base and had one day of rain. However, the conditions were good.  We found some runs that had great powder and the piste was well looked after.  A great job was done by the piste bashers.

The mountain: Runs were well marked.  Lifts were fast and queues (lines) were generally short.  One thing the mountain lacks is depth, that is, it is based on two facing sides of a valley, there did not seem to be a back-side to the ski area, therefore we seemed to spend time working up and down the valley sides and occasionally crossing over the road to get to the other side of the valley. Saalbach is well connected by lifts to the Hinterglemm, Lengau, Vorderglemm and Leogang ski areas, and there is also a free ski-bus service which runs up and down the valley.

There is also great coverage of the ski areas with webcams so it is possible to check out conditions up the mountain before you get out of bed!

The mountain is well served with numerous bars and cafes.

The weather: We had snow, sleet, rain, sun and low cloud.  A mixed bag of weather.  The snow held up well on the rain-day.

Apres ski: Hinterhagalm, which is up the mountain and is short ski back to the town, is worth checking out.  There are also numerous bars around the town that have lively and fun atmospheres.  Not the wildest of resorts in the evening.

Conclusion: A great trip, great value for money as we avoided the tour operators and put together our own package.
