The Glencoe Ski Area, Scotland

By on July 27, 2006 in Scotland

I have driven past the Glencoe ski area on many occasions and I have never stopped or really given it much thought.

The base lodge at the Glencoe ski area is about 390 m above sea level and is located on the A82 about 29.2 miles from Fort William (driving directions) and 79.8 miles from Glasgow (driving directions).

The approach to the ski area can be a bit tricky as it is a small turning off a straight stretch of road across Rannoch Moor. The problem with the turn is that you can see the ski area from some distance (on the left if driving towards Fort William / Glencoe) but the turning, because of the flatness of the moor, can be difficult to spot.  There is a sign!

From the main road, you follow a single track road for about 1 mile to the main lodge.

The main lodge is a small wooden structure and contains a small eating area and what appears to be some ski hire facilities. The lodge was open as the ski area was offering chair lift rides to the ski area, with an option of taking your mountain bike. (Interestingly, there was no way for the mountain bike to be carried on the lift other than for the rider to carry it. I was told that this was going to be fixed soon and that the necessary lift attachment was on order.)

In the base lodge, I had a quick chat with a member of staff and asked about the rumour I had heard that the ski area had closed (which it clearly had not!).  I was told the area had some real problems in around 2002 but that new management had taken over and the area had been open for the last 3 years.
