The Nevis Range ski area, Scotland

By on July 27, 2006 in Scotland

From Fort William, I decided to visit the Nevis Range ski area.

Strangely the Nevis Range ski area does not seem to be signposted from Fort William (unless I missed it!).

The ski area is about 6.7 miles outside Fort William on the A82 (driving directions), which ultimately heads off towards Inverness.  The ski area is a right turn off the A82 and is well sign posted.  The approach to the ski area is up a good road that works it way up through some pine woods.

The ski area appears to be quite large (for Scotland).  There is a good base lodge with ticket windows and ski hire areas.  There is also a good sized car park around the lodge area.

Like the Glencoe ski area, the Nevis Range area seems to be a bowl ski area that is accessed from the main lodge by a single lift, in this case, a gondola.  In the ski area, there are a couple of restaurants (one is called the Snow Goose and at 2150 ft must be one of the highest restaurants/cafes in Scotland), around 3 lifts and 7 drags/buttons.  Apparently, there are plans to increase the number of lifts.

During the summer the ski area appears to be very popular with mountain bikers and also hosts a number of mountain biking events.
