New Zealand: Christchurch (south island) to Palmerston North (north island)

By on September 9, 2007 in New Zealand

On Monday 10th September 2007 I plan to travel from Christchurch, which is on the south island of New Zealand, to Palmerston North on the north island….

This is a journey I would not attempt in the UK as it requires catching a train from Christchurch to Picton, then a ferry from Picton to Wellington, and finally a train from Wellington to Palmerston North. I personally think all the timings are a bit tight.

The train leaves Christchurch (south island New Zealand) at 07:00 in the morning and is due to arrive in Picton at 12:15, the ferry leaves at 13:15 for Wellington. If the train is late or delayed then the ferry is missed…

The ferry has around 60 miles (100 km) to cover from Picton to Wellington and is due into Wellington (north island New Zealand) at 16:15.

The train from Wellington to Palmerston North leaves at 17:17…. an hour to get from the ferry to the train station, buy a ticket, and find the train….

This will never work…….
