What is this? – Pandan Coconut

By on February 9, 2013 in Malaysia

While I was visiting the local supermarket I saw two guys making the following…

Pandan Coconut

Pandan Coconut

It was an interesting procedure. One guy took the coconut from the large container and attacked it with one of the biggest machetes I’ve seen so far.

The starting material – there seemed to be a lot of hacking and chopping to produce the final product

Once he had trimmed down the sides of the coconut the second guy used some instrument that looked a little like an elongated shoehorn to remove the “inner lining” (which was white, about the size of a softball, and only a few millimetres thick) and placed it in a container with some of the coconut milk.

I bought one, tried it, and really can’t make my mind up about it. I didn’t dislike it, but it is most probably something I won’t buy again. Seemed rather tasteless to me.
