Opened a Malaysian Bank account – very impressed with the service….

By on February 19, 2013 in Malaysia

Today I opened a bank account and I am now the proud owner of a Malaysian cash card.

Getting an account was becoming critical as my UK bank cards seem to be slowly dying one-by-one as they are being declined in shops (I think the bank is finding it odd I am over here), and I was worried that I was going to run out of plastic.

To open the account I needed from HR confirming I had a job, my passport, and a 1000 RM (~£200) deposit. The whole process was very smooth and after I had signed my name about 20 times, and spent just over an hour in the bank, I was all signed up!

Five things were striking about the experience:

  1. It was relatively quick and painless – only took an hour or so.
  2. They issued my card there and then. Amazing!
  3. The card doesn’t have my name on it.
  4. The numbers on the card are not raised, so no more old fashioned swipe machines, it is for electronic transactions only.
  5. They are using a six digit pin!

My bank card – I will just have to put up with Manchester United…

The card was initially set up with a pin of 123456 (I kid you not), and I was advised to change that before I left the bank (no kidding!). Changing the PIN was relatively easy, and that now means that I can put the year on my date of birth on my PIN (again, kidding…).

Whilst in the bank the security guard seemed to take a shine to me and decided to quiz me on what I was doing in Malaysia, how long had I been here, and what did I think of the place (or may be he just thought I was going rob the place). He then decided to teach me some Malay so terima kasih for reading this post…
