Desaru Beach Resort, Malaysia

By on March 10, 2013 in Malaysia

Just back from a weekend away at the Desaru Beach resort, and more specifically the Lotus Hotel.

Desaru is an interesting area. It is about a 90 min drive from the centre of Johor Bahru and is easily accessible along some fast and straight roads (the last one of which is a toll road). In fact, the drive out to Desaru is rather boring as it is just mile upon mile of palm oil plantations. However, the tedious drive is worth it.

The beaches are quite spectacular. There is mile upon mile of golden sand, which is only spoilt by the rubbish that has been washed in from the sea.

This was the first time I have dipped my toes into the South China Sea, and it was pretty warm. In fact, after coming from the UK and experiencing the seas there I was surprised just how warm the sea felt considering the air temperature was around 30°C.

Considering how warm the sea was it did appear to be an ideal place to go swimming, however, judging by the slope of the beach and the size of the waves it was apparent that the water would rapidly become deep and therefore it would be easy to get into difficulties. I stayed out of the sea on this trip.

The Lotus hotel was very nice, and it had a great kiddies water theme park. In fact, the theme park wasn’t just kids and I had a great time on the water slide called the Lazy River, which turned out to be far from lazy.

If you do stay at the Lotus make sure that you experience the “coconut torrent” in the waterpark. This “torrent” consists of a large coconut that must be nearly 2 m or more in diameter that fills up with water and then dumps it on the unsuspecting swimmers standing below. It actually hurts and has the potential to remove poorly fitted swimsuits.

One thing that struck me about the Desaru area was that there had clearly been a lot of investment in the area in the recent past, however, things were now beginning to look a little bit tired and what I guess were originally some hotels similar to the Lotus are now shut.

Overall, a fun weekend that was worth the effort of driving from Johor – will I be back? Most probably.
