A weekend in Kuching, Borneo Malaysia, and meeting some Orang-utans

By on March 18, 2013 in Malaysia

I spent this weekend in Kuching in East Malaysia and managed to see some Orang-utans in a local nature reserve.

Kuching is a nice town that is just over an hours flight from Johor.

Kuching

And in Malay Kuching means cat. Hence you see a lot of cat themed things around.

The town also has a very nice river front that has some stalls selling food and drink, and street merchants selling everything from beads and bracelets to artwork and cameras. There were also a few buskers around.

On the Sunday morning, I managed to get out early and head over to the Semenggoh Wildlife Centre to see some Orang-utans.

The Semenggoh Wildlife Centre is a nature reserve and the Orang-utans are allowed to roam free, however, twice a day food is put out for them at a feeding station and if there are no (or limited) fruits available locally in the forrest they will come down to eat. Feeding is at 8:30 am and again around 3 pm.

The wildlife centre is a 30 – 40-minute ride from the centre of Kuching (if you use a taxi make sure you get them to wait for you otherwise it will be impossible to get back).

I arrived at the centre around 8:30 am and walked down from the car-park to be greeted by this sight…

Truly amazing. I had no idea that we would be able to get so close, and that the Orang-utans would just be sitting there (there were a couple of ‘keepers’ around to make sure people didn’t get too close, and these animals are wild as they can come and go as they please).

The surrounding trees also had a couple more Orang-utans just hanging around.

The way the creatures moved around the trees was amazing. This one.

I spotted just sitting up a tree casually eating some fruit. It can also be seen in this photo. Can you spot it?

And then there were the daring high-wire acts…

In total, I saw two mothers with young, a couple of juveniles and a large male. All pretty impressive for 30 minutes.
