A weekend in Penang….

By on March 25, 2013 in Malaysia

Just back from a weekend in Penang, which is about a 70 minute flight north of Johor Bahru.

The first thing I spotted was some ‘heath and safety’ on a building site across the road from the hotel…

This was in fact my second visit to Penang (I was there in Nov 2012) and on that visit I discovered that George Town had UNESCO World Heritage Centre status for its mix of multicultural heritage resulting from over 500 years of trading between the Asia and Europe.

One area of particular interest is the Penang Clan Jetties which are a series of houses and walkways on stilts along the shoreline.

The jetties are worth an explore, but there is not a huge amount to them as they just run out from the shore and there is no means by which (as far as I could see) to cross from jetty to jetty. There were certainly some interesting houses and characters in the area….

The architecture of George Town is very interesting. There are a lot of two-storey building around that have shops on the ground floor and then shuttered rooms above.

Some of the plaster moulding on the pillars at the front of the building is quite intricate and colourful.

As with a number of towns in Malaysia George Town has a “little India” and “China Town”, both of which are worth an explore. “Little India” is particularly striking for its noise, hustle and bustle, and the wonderful smells coming from the restaurants.

Overall I like George Town. It is a busy place on the coast with a lot going on…
