Pollution at Tanjung Piai National Park (Taman Negara Tanjung Piai), Malaysia

By on August 5, 2013 in Malaysia

Tanjung Piai National Park (Taman Negara Tanjung Piai), Malaysia is great place to visit as it gives you the opportunity to get up close to Malaysian Mangrove swamp fauna and flora, however, one thing that it also highlights is how polluted the coastal waters around Malaysia are with plastic and other floating debris.

The Mangrove swamps really highlight this problem as the extensive root systems of the trees act as traps so that material once it has been washed ashore can no longer escape back to sea. In the park they do have regular attempts to clear the plastic and other debris, but there is just too much of it.

The material trapped by the roots of trees range from small plastic bottles, lengths of rope, plastic bags and sheets, and large pieces of polystyrene. Basically anything that floats gets trapped. I’ve even seen footballs, rugby balls, and a motorcycle helmet amongst the roots.

Don’t let the above put you off from visiting the park as there is still lots to look at…
