Leaving Las Vegas – fun at the airport… My bag has put on weight…

By on February 22, 2015 in USA

Finally (and with much sadness) I’m starting the journey back to Malaysia.

This is going to be another long day of travel. It all starts at the airport at 6:45 am for an 8:45 am flight. Flight to Los Angeles 1 hour, and 5 minutes, flight to Tokyo 12 hours, and finally from Tokyo to Singapore 7 hours 40 min. Total flying time 20 hours and 45 minutes, total travelling time (airport to airport) just over 24 hours.

United Airlines online check-in was a breeze (although I am still struggling with the concept of having a boarding pass on my phone), however at the airport it was damn confusing. There are further ‘check-in’ machines, and so I thought I had to go through things again. I approached a machine, scanned my passport (took three machines before the scan worked), and it told me I wasn’t booked on any flights. YIKES!

Finally, with the help of an ‘agent’ (who must spend all day sorting these things out), we established that what I needed to do was scan my phone. All sorted. United really should have a look at their system as it is not very user-friendly.

The next problem was my bag. It had put on significant weight during the trip. Now, considering that the bag was underweight by at least 3 lb when I flew out and taking into account I had thrown away all my unused toiletries, some old ski gear, and I was wearing a jumper that I had originally packed, I was surprised it was over by 3 lb. OK, so there was a new pair of lightweight hiking boots in there, but they don’t weigh as much as stuff removed. They don’t weigh 6 lb. Net result – I’m now wearing a ski coat and a jumper for a flight to the tropics so as to get the bag with all my ski gear below 50 lb. So, now it is not only going to be a long day of travel, but also a sweaty one.
