Summary of “My most mad ski trip yet?”

By on February 24, 2015 in General, USA

Well, I am back from what I dubbed “My most mad ski trip yet?”…. It was mad with all the travelling, but it was worth the effort.

Las Vegas: Totally weird place. Not sure what to make of it other than it is not my kind of place. It was “too”:

  • Too noisy

  • Too busy

  • Too loud

  • Too tacky

  • Too weird…

Skiing: Skiing was surprisingly good. We were originally going to head to Tahoe but abandoned that idea based on snow reports and instead went to Park City, which turned out to good move as we had a great time.

The Park City area also had a lack of snow, but the guys who looked after the local slopes had done a great job. There may not have been much snow on the mountains, but the trails had coverage and the groomers did a great job.

Over 6 days of skiing we managed to ski Park City (reasonable snow, but the mountain is in need to investment, which they may get this year), Canyons (2 days, formerly Wolf Mountain, massive investment in the last 20 years and hugely expanded – excellent conditions and a lot of fun), Alta (fantastic, best ski area on the trip), Snowbird (also excellent and up there with Alta), and Solitude (another good little ski area).

Overall the skiing was great, and considering the lack of snow in in Utah this winter it was much better than I was expecting. Hats off to the guys who look after the slopes.

Road Trips: The road trips, the drives to and from Las Vegas to Park City – 8 hours each way, were great fun. The drive from Las Vegas north was really interesting as the dessert of Las Vegas slowly gave way to the mountains of Utah, and the drive back was great as we went to Zion National Park.

Zion National Park: Fantastic. Great rock structures and views. It was also good to be there in the early season as the place was quiet. Two of the trails we did near the hotel were busy, but The Watchman Trail, a 2 hour hike, we had pretty mush to ourselves. The park is stunning with some amazing canyons and rock structures. A geologists

Summary: Overall a great trip and it was well worth the effort of 48 hours of travelling…
