Mandalay International Airport (MDL) and the drive to Mandalay

By on March 24, 2015 in Myanmar/Burma

Mandalay International Airport (MDL) is small, very small, however, that didn’t stop me from being mobbed by taxi drivers as soon as I left baggage claim.

The trip from the airport to the hotel took around 35 minutes and cost 12,000 kyat (US$12; £8). The drive was kind of interesting….

For a start they drive on the righthand side of the road in Myanmar, and yet the taxi had the driving wheel on the right… It should be on the left if you drive on the right. Essentially this means visibility is reduced for the driver when overtaking.

Also, they seem to use the horn a lot… And I mean a lot! We were on a very bumpy duel carriage way and yet every time we came near some one to overtake the horn had to be sounded, at least twice, once when we were still some distance behind, and again when we were in the blind spot. Is this behaviour a consequence of having the steering wheel on the wring side of the car?

As can be seen in the above photo, Myanmar is very dry…. Almost desert like in places.

Just like Malaysia, motorbikes everywhere. What was also a first for me was pillion passengers riding sidesaddle…

By law helmets should be worn… But as can be seen in the above, this is not always the case, or even a yellow hard hat will do…

Nice helmet!
