A visit to the Yadanabon Zoological Gardens, Mandalay, Myanmar (Burma)

By on March 25, 2015 in Myanmar/Burma

This was a mistake as I don’t like zoos…. I wasn’t paying attention and I thought Yadanabon Zoo was a botanical garden as there were a lot of market gardens outside.

Entrance for ‘foreigners’ was 2,000 kyat (US$2; £1.60), and it was pretty grim…

There was a section of birds…

And yes there really were tigers – I saw three. Unfortunately, they were in very small cages and two of them just spent their time continuously pacing back and forwards, and the third was laying down. Not a great environment for such animals.

Near the tigers were some bears…

None of the animals were in particularly stimulating environments.

What was odd were the water fountains around the place… There was a crocodile…

And an elephant…

There were also real elephants…

The elephants in Yadanabon Zoo, Mandalay, Myanmar weren’t much better off than the tigers (see post 1 on the zoo).

Sad….

And the hippos were in a very small pool….

The zoo was sad. The animals didn’t appear to be neglected, but the conditions they are kept in are less than ideal.
