Park Royal Hotel, Yangon (Rangoon), Myanmar (Burma)

By on March 27, 2015 in Myanmar/Burma

Arrived at the Park Royal Hotel Yangon (Rangoon). An interesting looking place, don’t know what to make of it.

First of all I had to have my backpack x-rayed, but not my suitcase, and I had to walk through a security arch (which my belt didn’t set off – so the arch can’t be that sensitive), and then I had to be waved with ‘security wand’, which also didn’t detect my metal belt buckle.

At reception I had to hand over US$150 ‘room security’, no option of swiping a credit card, they wanted cash, and they would take the local kyat.

All of the above is a bit odd. I’ve never been asked for a cash security at a hotel before, and I have never had to pass through a security screen to enter a hotel. What is the security for? Who is the hotel trying to protect us from?

Oh, the room is very nice, but the WiFi and hardwired internet (Ethernet) is very very slow.

Update: Since I wrote the above the above I have noticed that other hotels in the area also have x-ray machines and security arches. Seems to be a common thing in Yangon.
