Restaurant Star Chef Kitchen, Gelang Patah, Johor, Malaysia

Restaurant Star Chef Kitchen was an interesting little find as I had driven past it numerous times and it had never occurred to me to stop until this evening.

The place is one of those typical corner Chinese restaurants that you tend to find in Malaysia, that is, it was open on two sides to the elements, there was no air conditioning, the food was fresh (most of what we ate was still swimming in the tanks when we arrived), beer was available, and everything that was served was very tasty.

Two things caught our eye on the menu. The first was Suckling Chicken (shown below). What intrigued us was that chickens don’t suckle, so how could this be Suckling Chicken? Well, what ever it was, despite its flattened appearance, it was very tasty.

The second thing that intrigued us on the menu (so, like the Suckling Chicken we ordered it) was the Marmite Crab (shown below). We did spend some time discussing whether or not the Marmite in Marmite Crab was Marmite as in the French for cooking pot, or Marmite as in the yeast extract spread found in the UK. It turned out to be the spread! As far as we could tell the crabs had been smeared with Marmite, wrapped in foil, and then baked in an oven. Surprisingly the mixture of salty/beefy Marmite and the sweet flesh of the crab worked rather well together.

So, overall an excellent meal that was good value and very tasty.
