Johor Bahru City Square, 108 Jln Wong Ah Fook, 80000 Johor Bahru, Johor, Malaysia

OK, I am not a big fan of shopping, or of shopping malls (if I had to go shopping I would far rather spend my time poking around in a small shop or a market), but even I will admit that Malaysia tends to do big shopping malls very well, and two great examples can be found in the centre of Johor Bahru – the Johor Bahru City Square Mall (108 Jln Wong Ah Fook, 80000 Johor Bahru, Johor, Malaysia) and KOMTAR Johor Bahru City Centre (JBCC) Mall, which is next door.

Johor Bahru City Square has possibly the hottest carpark I have ever been in – it extends for 3 floors below the mall, is always like an oven, and is nearly always full by mid-afternoon.

The hottest carpark in the world?

The mall is big, with 5 floors of shops (mainly clothing, restaurants, and hair dressers), with a cinema on the top floor.

One thing I really don’t like about Johor Bahru City Square Mall is paying for the carpark, I have no problem with spending the money, is actually handing over the cash that is the problem.

Like a lot of Malaysian carparks the mall operates a card-in/card-out system. You collect a card on the way in, you swipe the card and pay at a machine on the way out. The problem is in Johor Bahru City Square there are too few machines, and you often end up queueing just to pay for parking.

Recently I discovered that you can use ‘Touch ’n’ Go’ cards at the barriers, and that just makes life so much easier, and you save money, as you only pay for the exact time your were parked, whereas the ticket machines charge to the nearest hour, and they round up!
