Australia — Mandoon, Reid Highway, Perth, Australia
Off for lunch at a winery
August 2015
I went to the Mandoon Estate, about a 30-minute drive from the centre of Perth.
The Estate is a winery (or, as I would say, Vineyard) with a brewery, a restaurant, and an art gallery on-site, and it is hugely popular with visitors. We went on a "winter's day”; it was sunny but far from hot by Australian standards, and the place was heaving. We had trouble parking and a 40-minute wait for a table in the restaurant. (We could have eaten outside, as there were tables available.)
I tried a ‘taster’ for the local beers, and they were good. And a bit stronger than what I am used to drinking in the UK.
Brauhaus Lager: 4.8% alcohol by volume (ABV), a Munich Lager — a very nice beer, but a bit light in taste for me.
Kaisers Choice: 5.0% ABV, Hefeweisen — quite ‘perfumed’. I am not a great fan of Hefeweisen beers, but this one was very nice.
Premier: 4.8% ABV, Belgian Pale Ale — This was a lovely beer. Very, very drinkable, and it was a toss-up between this and Thunderbird (below) as to which was my favourite of the beers on offer.
Thunderbird: 5.0% ABV, Pale Ale — This beer reminded me of several beers I have had in the States. Very drinkable and very enjoyable.
Black Swan: 5.0% ABV, Black IPA — I am not a great fan of ‘black’ beers as I find they taste a bit heavy, but this one I found this one to be very drinkable.
I enjoyed my visit to Mandoon. It’s a trendy place with good beer and lovely food.
