Australia — Perth in the evening

A night out on the town

August 2015

I went out for the evening in Perth to check out the new local “small-bar scene”. And there are plenty of small bars scattered around the town centre.

During the evening, we visited the following:

  • Print Hall
  • Cheeky Sparrow
  • Bivouac Canteen & Bar
  • Mechanics Institute

Formerly a printing works on 131 St George's Terrace (William St.), Perth, WA 6000, Australia. It was nicely converted into a bar, which has maintained much of the original decor — a good meeting place for the start of the evening.

Cheeky Sparrow

The Cheeky Sparrow was an attractive little bar tucked down a side street (Wolf Ln. (317 Murray St.), Perth, WA 6000, Australia) — it was pretty tricky to find. Very popular with the ‘hipster’ crowd and a slightly younger clientele than the Print Hall.

Bivouac Canteen & Bar

A trendy little bar/café at 198 William St, Perth, WA 6000, Australia.

We had a few beers and food — a spicy cracked-wheat dish and two pizzas — lamb and a spicy chicken — all good.

Mechanics Institute

Upstairs bar down a side street (222 William St, Perth, WA 6000, Australia). Lots of outdoor seating. Again, very popular.

Summary

It was a fun evening in Perth, despite the cold and the rain (it always sounds odd writing that the ‘cold and rain’ in Australia). The bars were quiet due to the weather and a big amateur sporting evening ‘city to surf’ run the next day. However, it was still a fun evening out.
