So far, on this trip around SE Asia, I have been to the following:

  • Bali, Indonesia — I loved the place
  • Hong Kong — I was not a fan
  • Vietnam — Hanoi, Ha Long Bay, and Saigon — I had a great time and would go back to Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City (Saigon)
  • Cambodia — beautiful countryside, awe-inspiring temples, lovely people, shame Siem Reap is not that nice

And my next stop — Laos.

So, why Laos? Well, friends said I had to go and check it out. And one friend described it as his favourite country in SE Asia. So, why not?

My original plan was to fly to Luang Prabang and use that as a jumping-off point to take a tour into the jungle. But, the only company that offered the type of tour I was interested in didn't have dates that fitted my travel plans; hence I was on the no plan plan. I would make it up as I went.

I booked a room in Luang Prabang for five nights and hoped I would find something to do once I got there. Failing that, I would sit in my room and catch up on writing blog posts if the Wi-Fi was up to it.

My flight left Siem Reap International Airport (REP) 30 minutes late. And it was an odd flight.

I was flying on an Airbus A321 with 184 seats, 16 of which were business. On board were sixteen passengers, one in business class and 15 in the economy section. I couldn’t recall ever being on such an empty flight. It was spooky.

As we took off, there were some stunningly beautiful clouds, and as we flew over Cambodia, I was amazed at how much of the country seemed to be underwater. I knew it had rained a lot during my visit, but I didn’t think it had been that bad.
