Hong Kong — Chinese Banyan of Nathan Road at night, Hong Kong

Stunning trees in a Hong Kong Street

September 2015

On the lower half of Nathan Road, Kowloon, Hong Kong, there is a collection of old Chinese Banyan (Ficus macrocarpa) trees. These trees used to line the length of the road, and there are now only a few left. Each tree is now protected and has an identification tab.

The trees are spectacular and look even better at night due to the slightly eerie glow cast on them by the street lights.

Nathan Road at night is busy and full of lights and people. It is an interesting place to explore.

At the harbour end of the road, I found I couldn’t walk more than 10 yards (ca. 9 m) without being offered a “lovely" or “genuine" Rolex.

Finally, at the end of a long hot walk down the road, going down an escalator to get to the subway to the Star Ferry was like descending into a lovely cool swimming pool. It felt refreshing after the heat and humidity of the street, and it was great to get away from the sound of traffic.
