Tips for eating out
September 2015
Finding somewhere to eat out, especially after a long, hot day exploring a city, can be tricky. In such circumstances, I turn to Google to suggest a local dining place.
My rules for finding somewhere to eat when travelling are:
- Try to eat local — find a local restaurant and try the local food.
- Avoid tourist traps — I avoid places full of fellow travellers.
- Go somewhere busy — if they’re busy, they are tuning food over, and you’re less likely to pick up food poisoning.
- Follow your nose — I have found some great places to eat by following the smell wafting down the street.
- When in the restaurant or at the food stall — see what the locals are ordering and go for the same.
- If all else fails, go for a “brand” — if you can’t find anywhere to eat in which you would feel comfortable, then go for a “branded” place such as McDonald’s or Starbucks. Yes, I know this is not great, but at least you know what you will get.
So using a combination of Foursquare and Google, I found the Date Day Restaurant 日溢中西美食, and it took a bit of finding due to the position being wrong on the maps and also my inability to find the building number.
The Date Day Restaurant 日溢中西美食 met 1 to 3 on the above list, and once I was inside, the food smelt pretty good (that ticks number 4 on the list). I looked around at what the other customers were eating, and it seemed to be a wide range of things, so I just picked from the menu by pointing.
When my food arrived, it was a little disappointing. It didn’t look that great. (see the photo below), however, it was tasty and very cheap.
The meal I had was beef with black beans, with hot lemon tea to drink — total cost 71HKD (£6.50 GBP; $9 USD)
