Hong Kong — Murray House 美利樓, Stanley, Hong Kong

Five pillars spare?

September 2015

As part of the Big Bus Tour, I visited Murray House 美利樓 in Stanley.

Murray House 美利樓 is located on the waterfront at Stanley, Hong Kong. Murray House 美利樓 is one of Hong Kong's oldest buildings and was built in 1844 in the Central District as officers' quarters at the Murray Barracks. It was moved to Stanley in 1998.

When Murray House 美利樓 was moved, detailed plans were drawn up, and all the stones were carefully labelled so the building could be accurately reconstructed. However, I was told that five pillars were left over after the work was finished, which can be seen in the image below.

Murray House 美利樓 does look rather grand when viewed from Blake Pier 赤柱卜公碼頭 and must have made excellent officers’ quarters.
