Hong Kong — Post-Breakfast Market

First day exploring Hong Kong

September 2015

After breakfast on Spring Garden Lane, I decided to go for a wander.

In no time, I came across an excellent street market that I had to explore.

I love street markets as you get to see the local foods (and not what is served to the tourists) and how people go about their daily lives. And this market didn’t disappoint as it offered everything from clothes and household gear to fresh meat, fish, fruit and vegetables.

I have no idea what is in the next photo. They appear to be eggs that have been buried in the soil.

The cuts of meat on display were interesting. There was no refrigeration, and the temperature was around 30 ºC.

Interestingly, the butcher used a red light on the meat. I can only assume this was to help it look red, bloody, and fresh.

There was also fish on sale, both fresh and dried.

And there was a great selection of fresh fish.

The fruit and veg looked great.

And I liked this shop’s inventive use of buckets on ropes as tills. The seller would pull down the bucket, put in the money, grab the change, and then the bucket would be let go to ascend back to the ceiling.

And there was also food to eat — it was a shame I had just had breakfast.

It was a great little street market.

I have no idea where the street market was in Hong Kong — I was still struggling to get a GPS lock on my phone. All I can tell you is that it was near where I had breakfast on Spring Garden Lane.
