Laos — Mount Phousi, Luang Prabang (ຫລວງພະບາງ/ຫຼວງພະບາງ), Laos — part 1 of 2
Visiting a local tourist attraction
September 2015
Mount Phousi is a hill near the centre of Luang Prabang (ຫລວງພະບາງ/ຫຼວງພະບາງ), Laos, and offers stunning panoramic views across Luang Prabang (ຫລວງພະບາງ/ຫຼວງພະບາງ), and the Mekong and Nam Khan Rivers. Visitors are advised to catch the sunrise or sunset from the hill as they are spectacular. However, I didn’t have time for a sunrise or sunset visit, so I climbed the hill during the afternoon.
The hill is not very high, about 100 m, but it is a hard climb in the heat of Laos. The hill has several Buddhist shrines, including the 16th-century Wat Tham Phousi temple.
The route to the top is via a series of steep steps (see the photos below)
As I approached the start of the hill, I did wonder if I was in the right place, as I was wandering down a street in the suburb of Luang Prabang (ຫລວງພະບາງ/ຫຼວງພະບາງ).
There were countless steps to climb.
And when there weren’t steps, there were walkways slowly climbing upwards.
Along the route were several small shrines.
And even more steps and shrines.
The climb was hot, tiring, and enjoyable, but what about the views?
For the views, see part 2.
