In April 2015, I discovered (and I can’t remember on which site I saw the information) a blog post saying there were two Commonwealth War Graves Commission (CWGC) Cemeteries in Johor Bahru, Malaysia. This struck me as odd, as I wasn’t aware of any such cemeteries, and I thought that the nearest CWGC Cemetery was at Kranji in Singapore.

A quick search of the CWGC produced two results:

  1. Jalan Mahmoodiah Muslim Cemetery, Johur
  2. Johore Bahru Muslim Cemetery

The strange thing about the cemeteries’ web pages was that no identified casualties were listed for either graveyard. So I decided to investigate. Using the information on CWGC, I searched for the cemeteries.

I found the cemeteries, and they were both in the same place, so it appears it is one cemetery. Moreover, as far as I could see, there was no evidence of any CWGC involvement or war graves. So, why are these two (one?) cemeteries listed on CWGC?

Odd.

Since I wrote the above, the CWGC have brought together the original two pages for Jalan Mahmoodiah Muslim Cemetery, Johur and Johore Bahru Muslim Cemetery, and noted that it is the same place. But, there are still no burials listed. So why has the CWGC got them listed?
