Malaysia — Johor Bahru — Muzium Nanas Pontian — The Pineapple Museum, Johor, Malaysia
A must-visit for anyone coming to Johor
May 2015
Yes, Johor has a Muzium Nanas — a Pineapple Museum.
I first came across the Muzium Nanas in 2012 but didn’t have time to stop, and for some reason, I have wanted to go back since then. I mean, a museum about pineapples. Who wouldn’t want to go?
Well, I finally made it to the Muzium Nanas in May 2015.
First, it was not an easy place to find. There were signs to it, but they seemed to be quite random, the place was not apparent from the main road (it was down a little side road), and at the time, Google Maps had it in the wrong place.
The cost of entry was RM2 (40 p in the UK, 60 cents in the US).
The pineapple museum, as you would expect, was full of information about pineapples, and as pineapples were one of the major crops in the area, they decided to build a museum.
There were models of pineapples.
What surprised me was how many varieties of pineapples were commercially grown.
And the different varieties of pineapple had different looks and different chemical properties.
There were also pineapple products on display, with pineapple being made from polystyrene painted yellow.
Not only did the museum cover the different types of pineapples and pineapple products, but it also explored the use of science in pineapple cultivation.
And the use of mechanisation in the industry.
Outside the museum, there was a garden in which they grew several pineapple varieties.
As strange as it sounds, it was a very interesting visit. I leant a lot about pineapples and growing pineapples.
The bit I found most fascinating was the pineapple garden as, for some reason, I thought pineapples grew up trees like dates and coconuts. I had no idea they grew in bushes.
It is never too late to learn something new.
