My favourite Laksa house in Johor Bahru
May 2015
The W.W. Laksa House 水塘路辣沙 was my go to place from Laksa in the Johor Bahru area.
W.W. Laksa House 水塘路辣沙 was a Malaysian Restaurant and Coffee Shop located at 6A& 36A1, Jalan Kolam Air (Taman Water Works), 80100 Johor Bahru, Johor, Malaysia. If you are interested (and you probably aren’t, and this may put you off), the W.W. stands for Water Works.
The place, as the name suggests, only serves Laksa, or as it is also called, Curry Laksa.
Laksa is a coconut-based curry soup with bean curd puffs, fish sticks, shrimp, and cockles (cockles are optional at WW). The small dish on the top right in the photo below contains sambal chilli paste (chilli peppers with shrimp paste and possibly some fish sauce, garlic, ginger, and rice vinegar), which, when added to the Laksa, gives it a nice kick.
The dish also contains noodles, and at the Laksa House, you get a choice — I prefer Yellow Mee, a round, moderately thin noodle.
You can also order otak-otak (shown below) at the W.W. Laksa House 水塘路辣沙.
Otak-otak translates to ‘fish brains’ and is ground-up fish mixed with spices, then wrapped in a banana leaf and grilled. It tastes better than it sounds.
In 2015, the cost of a large Laksa, a drink and some otak-otak was around RM9 (just under US$3; £2).
If you are in the area, it is worth checking out, but get there early because they close as soon as they run out of noodles.
