Near the Kanchanaburi Allied War Cemetery is the Thailand-Burma Railway Centre (พิพิธภัณฑ์ทางรถไฟไทย-พม่า). And it is worth visiting if you want to understand the building of the railway and what happened to the Prisoners of War.

Rod Beattie and three friends built the privately owned museum, which opened in January 2003. Funding for the museum is by donations from visitors and ex-railway Prisoners of War. The donations fund the museum’s operating expenses and further research into the “Death Railway” story. In 2005, the Museum received official recognition and support from the Dutch.

The museum presents an accurate account of the railway construction compiled by Rod Beattie using testimony from former Prisoners of War and archives in various countries.

I found it to be an excellent museum. Rod Beattie had conducted a lot of research and produced some exceptional displays containing donated artefacts and testimonies from former POW and/or their families.

Sadly, I was unable to take any photographs in the museum. And I decided not to take any sneaky shots out of respect for the work carried out by Rod Beattie to capture the story behind the construction of the “Death Railway”.
